{"id":102,"date":"2021-05-28T19:56:09","date_gmt":"2021-05-28T19:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/?p=102"},"modified":"2025-01-06T15:45:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T15:45:10","slug":"all-about-timothy-hay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/all-about-timothy-hay\/","title":{"rendered":"Timothy Hay Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of Timothy Hay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Timothy hay<\/strong><\/em>, also referred to as Timothy-grass, is a grass native to Europe.&nbsp; It is also known as meadow cat\u2019s tail and common cat\u2019s tail and can be found in most of Europe, excluding the Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grass was introduced to North America by settlers in the early 18<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u00a0 It was first cataloged by a man named John Hurd, who has noticed it growing wild in New Hampshire and started feeding it to his livestock.\u00a0 He called it \u201cHurd grass\u201d.\u00a0 In around 1720 a farmer named Timothy Hansen began cultivating it and promoting it commercially throughout the other states.\u00a0 It was around that time the grass got the name \u201c<strong>Timothy Hay<\/strong>\u201d and the name has stuck to this day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-Hay-1-e1736178166978.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-Hay-1-e1736178166978.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-487\" style=\"width:562px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-Hay-1-e1736178166978.png 800w, https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-Hay-1-e1736178166978-300x80.png 300w, https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-Hay-1-e1736178166978-768x204.png 768w, https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-Hay-1-e1736178166978-624x166.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timothy Hay for Forage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Timothy Hay is most used as feed for cattle and horses.&nbsp; It is noted for its relatively low protein and high fibre content.&nbsp; It also contains low moisture which makes the dried grass ideal for storage without worrying about rotting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mature horses especially benefit from the low protein and high-quality nutritional content of <em><strong>Timothy hay<\/strong><\/em> as it allows them to eat without gaining extra calories or weight.&nbsp; These same dietary factors are beneficial for thoroughbred race horses.&nbsp; <em>Timothy hay<\/em> is easy on animals\u2019 digestive systems and its high fibre content promotes regular bowel movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, horse owners and cattle producers will mix <strong>Timothy hay<\/strong> with other forages like alfalfa and red clover, especially if they feel their animals could benefit from the extra protein and calories offered by legume forages.&nbsp; Since <em><strong>Timothy hay<\/strong><\/em> has a low calcium content, it is ideal feed for domestic animals like rabbits and guinea pigs, which are may be more prone to developing bladder stones and crystallization of the urine.&nbsp; Many small animal vets recommend <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Timothy hay<\/span> to avoid these problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timothy Hay for Export<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-hay-export.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-488\" style=\"width:283px;height:auto\" title=\"hay export\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-hay-export.jpg 800w, https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-hay-export-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-hay-export-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/barr-ag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/timothy-hay-export-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Timothy hay<\/strong><\/em> grows extremely well under Canada\u2019s growing conditions and is in demand in countries along the Pacific Rim, specifically in Japan.&nbsp; It is used to add fibre to the diets of cattle, and as forage for horses in the Asian market. This huge export market has picked up substantially in Western Canada, with producers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barr-ag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Barr-Ag Hay &amp; Grain Exporters<\/strong><\/a> working hard to keep up with the pace of the worlds expanding demand for Timothy hay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.agric.gov.ab.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development<\/a>, export shipments from Canada\u2019s western provinces have increased from a trial shipment of 17 tonnes in the early 1980s to over 300,000 tonnes in 2003-04.&nbsp; Out of that total, 80% of it is going to Japan making them Canada\u2019s largest customer for <em><strong>Timothy hay<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barr-Ag Timothy Hay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Grown near the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Barr-Ag\u2019s <strong>Timothy hay<\/strong> is argued to be some of the most palatable hay in the world.&nbsp;We are fortunate to have clean air, rich soil and a pristine environment in which to grow our hay.
